i love this piece in the washington post how fauci and 5 other health specialists deal with covid 19 risks in their everyday lives detailing how anthony fauci and other health specialists stay safe at home. read the article for the details and nuances. what is most striking is the consensus amongst them (for the most part) and the simplicity.
my top takeaways were that for the most part they all:
public outdoors:
- wear masks when they leave the house
- except when 6 feet away from people
- don’t wear masks when exercise
- do swim in outdoor pools
public indoors
- avoid no matter how few people are in the space
- wear masks when can’t avoid
- don’t wear masks inside a private closed office
- don’t swim in indoor pools
surfaces:
- don’t really worry about surfaces as communicating the virus
- but wash your hands a lot anyway
- and for some reason many of them let their purchases sit for a while even though they say it doesn’t matter
food:
- eat takeout
- eat outdoors in restaurants if you can be seated 6 feet apart
- (but none of them had time to do it, busy saving us all)
- don’t eat indoors in restaurants no matter what
- don’t eat from same container
- even though not clear why since not worried about surfaces
socializing
- do socialize outdoors 6 feet apart (mostly no masks)
- don’t socialize indoors with people who aren’t already exposed
- except when family quarantines first
