i have been one of the biggest naysayers around on the pandemic of fear in this covid-19 thing. i have collected the opinions of health experts who point out that people die from various flus for which we do and don’t have vaccines, that we need to take sensible precautions like washing our hands and not touching our faces, that high risk people need to stay at home and we need to stay away from them.
in certain circles, i have referred to this virus as an “outside issue” which we take no opinions on. i have asserted that it is “codependent” to tell other people not to hold hands or to touch stuff, they can decide for themselves.
as of late yesterday, and then reinforced by this article that was updated today, i have changed my mind. i have realized a few key things that are different here:
o unlike many viruses, i can be a carrier or a transmitter with no symptoms whatsoever while i remain completely healthy
o this means that my decision to go be in groups because i feel healthy can be very selfish. i could literally transmit a deadly virus to someone either directly or indirectly with that decision
o this article convinced me that if we all hunker down for 2 weeks and basically cancel everything that can be cancelled, the following things could happen:
o we can slow the rate of transmission dramatically
• many lives will be saved at a minimum
• health care systems that are otherwise going to be overrun with cases can quite possibly actually meet demand
o if we’re really vigilant we could completely eradicate the virus
