thirty years ago today on the morning of may 4, 1990, i, sara steven nichols, married william joseph magavern iii in front of a civil judge in downtown new orleans, louisiana.
the bride wore a stunning size 20 pink suit.
the groom wore seersucker.
the witnesses were just the people that happened to be there.
right before the ceremony, which had been planned for several months, i asked the clerk “i’m planning to keep my maiden name, is there anything i have to do or sign?”
“keep your maiden name?” the clerk drawled back.
“this is louisiana, darlin’, i don’t think you can keep your maiden name.”
but we continued with the ceremony anyway, rushed back to the hotel to change into shorts and ran off to celebrate at the new orleans jazz & heritage festival. we danced with joy for 3 days then called our parents. a majority of them of whom were thrilled to hear the news.
today, 30 years later, we are still filled with joy, still in love and very very blessed by these years together.
oh, and only one of us can still fits easily into their wedding suit.
